AWS Serverless: Creating an S3 Bucket

AWS create S3 bucket

Some caveats.  Out of the box, AWS serverless hosting is meant for simple websites with files that all public.  Neither S3 buckets nor CloudFront process .htaccess website customisation such as rewrite rules or authentication.  CloudFront functions or Lambda@Edge can provide similar functionality - I will post more details once I have figured out the details.

AWS Serverless: An Overview

AWS serverless overview

I run a number of Drupal, MediaWiki, and static websites on an AWS EC2 t2-micro server. The server Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP stack is no longer supported, primarily because of conflicting server and Drupal requirements made upgrading difficult.  My plan is to create static versions of the MediaWiki and Drupal sites.

Unwilling to Repair: The Microwave

Failed LG microwave

My LG over-the-range microwave failed after 15 years.  It showed an F-5 code which is associated with the humidity sensor.  I had replaced the humidity sensor in the previous countertop microwave - it worked for several years until it was replaced to increase countertop space.

Interac e-Transfer and EQ Bank Connections

Interac e-Transfer limits

I have converted to electronic banking almost exclusively - I write about one cheque a year to local small businesses, and even they are starting to accept electronic payments.  Larger businesses are set up for online payments, while Interac e-Transfer works for smaller businesses and person-to-person transactions.

Ability to Repair: The Mower Wheel, Part Two

Mower wheel with bronze bushings

I picked up the flange and sleeve bushings mentioned in Ability to Repair: the Mower Wheel.  The sleeve was easy to insert into the flange bushing using a bench vise.  The flange was too wide to fit into a recess in the mower wheel.

Ability to Repair: the Mower Wheel

Lawn mower wheel and bearings

The rear wheel on my electric mower fell off.  The mower is getting on but otherwise is still in working order - even the batteries take a usable charge.  Each of the rear wheels has two ball bearings pressed into a 1.25" hole in the wheel which rolls on a 0.5" shaft.  The inner bearing (lower right) was still intact but also failing.

Keeping Ikea Looking Good

Ikea furniture covers

I have an Ikea Henriksdal bar stool where the seat cover is showing its age.  Ikea has long discontinued this line and had no suggestions on a replacement seat cover.  Google to the rescue!

Demand Management and Hydro One's myEnergyRewards

Hourly Ontario electricity demand

In Ontario, air conditioning combined with dinner preparation drives up electricity demands on sweltering summer afternoons.  Based on https://www.ieso.ca/en/Power-Data/Data-Directory, the peak usage in the 1994-2002 period was on August 4/2001.

PayPal's "Automatic Payments" and Currency Exchange Fees

PayPal automatic payment conversion optionBanks, credit cards, and PayPal typically charge currency exchange fees of 2.5% or more on top of the actual currency exchange rate.  I have a credit card that does not apply any additional fees, useful when travelling and purchasing products or services from outside Canada.

A Tale of PayPal's "Automatic Payments"

I received a reminder that an annual subscription was due, with some vague wording suggesting that it was an automatic payment.  I did not recall setting up a pre-authorised payment and could not log into the eCommerce site due to a company change.  I found that that I had last paid via PayPal, and via PayPal's Help, end up at the Settings (the gear icon) / Payments / Automatic Payments page.
