I subscribe to WIRED for its wide ranging articles of which Rhett Allain's are a favourite. He describes a wide range of real-world problems, from The Physics of Faraday Cages to the Monty Hall problem in Let’s Make a Deal—With Python!. In Could a Cockroach Survive a Fall From Space?, he explores how different objects (included cockroaches) fall in a vacuum and in air, as well as the impact of heating due to friction. Spoiler alert: the cockroach will likely survive.
Allain is able to explain complex physics in ways that a layperson can understand without oversimplification. His articles often involve formulas, but he frequently includes python scripts that help visualise the solution. If Allain had taught physics at the University of Toronto, I might not have jumped ship to psychology.
